Jean Monnet Lecture at BSIS: Dr Vasilyan on the EU and Armenia

Dr Syuzanna Vasilyan – Armenia as a Symptom: Check-up of the EU as a ‘Moral Power’ in the South Caucasus

In September 2013 the Armenian President announced that his country would not sign an Association Agreement with the EU, but join the Customs Union with Russia instead. While this announcement did not receive as much attention as Ukraine’s decision not to sign, it signalled serious problems for the EU’s Eastern Partnership. Armenia is a country facing huge economic challenges and is a key player in the frozen conflict around Nagorno-Karabakh. Its change of course formed a serious test for the Eastern Partnership.

On Tuesday 21 January at 12.00 Dr. Syuzanna Vasilyan (Assistant Professor and Jean Monnet Chair at American university Armenia) will give a lecture on EU-Armenia relations. Please find further details below. Participation is free. The lecture is the first of a series of Jean Monnet Lectures at BSIS (with the support of the Lifelong Learning Programme of the EU). Dr. Vasilyan is Armenian and an expert in the European Neighbourhood Policy. Her lecture is a unique opportunity to exchange views on Armenia, the Southern Caucasus and the Eastern Partnership.
