Word Limits/Goals on Essays and Dissertations

Dear students,

Just an email to clarify the policy on word limits/goals: the word limit/goal for the papers are as stated in the syllabus/ by your convenor, i.e. 5000 words is 5000 words (do not panic if your essay is 5092 words, but it should not be 5500). This INCLUDES footnotes but EXCLUDES Bibliography and Appendices. This applies to both Politics and Law students.

For dissertations, the word limit/goal is 14,000 words for Politics dissertations and 15-20,000 words for Law dissertations. As for papers, the word count INCLUDES footnotes but EXCLUDES Bibliography and Appendices (such as the text of an EU Directive that you have included).

Hope this answers your concerns. The above policy should be consistent with any other sources. If it is not, please bring it to my attention, and the website or other source will be amended.
