Turkish Foreign Policy toward the Iranian Nuclear Programme: In Search of a New Middle East Order after the Arab Spring and the Syrian Civil War

BSIS PhD student Moritz Pieper has recently published an article in ‘Alternatives – Turkish Journal of International Relations’. In his article, Moritz analyses Turkish foreign policy toward the Iranian nuclear programme and situates Ankara’s position toward the Iranian nuclear dossier within the context of Turkish-Iranian bilateral relations and Turkey’s broader regional policies. He contends that Turkey’s geopolitical location offered the potential for Ankara to mediate between Iran and the West, but that this potential is now largely lost as a consequence of Turkish-Iranian disagreements over the Syrian civil war.

The focus of Moritz Pieper’s research is on regional and inter-regional power dynamics in the Middle East and Central Asia, with a special interest in non-Western foreign policies toward the Iranian nuclear programme. His PhD dissertation analyzes Chinese, Russian and Turkish foreign policy toward the Iranian nuclear programme, reflecting on the emergence of alternative narratives of diplomacy in a world of conflicting power centres and on changing conceptions of security cultures toward Iran. He is supervised by Dr. Tom Casier.
