The European Union’s Role & Responsibility in International Mediation

On behalf of the University of Kent, Brussels School of International Studies (BSIS), the Brussels Negotiation and Mediation Forum has the great pleasure of inviting you to a Roundtable Discussion on “The European Union’s Role & Responsibility in International Mediation”, scheduled to take place on Monday, May 27th, 2013 at the European Parliament.

We present to you a student-led roundtable that will address topics such as EU mediation processes, external intervention, security, EU foreign policy, regional cooperation, and ethics. Panelists will explore the EU as an international mediator involved in present day global peacemaking initiatives and its aspiration to move forward in the field of international mediation on the global stage.

The current conflict in Syria will act as a case study to discuss the EU’s practical approach to international mediation. The following question will lead the topic of discussion: In the context of the intensifying conflict in Syria should the role of the EU, in light of the recent recognition from the Nobel Peace Prize, assume a greater responsibility in international mediation?
