{"id":587,"date":"2014-04-14T16:31:16","date_gmt":"2014-04-14T15:31:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/biosciences\/?p=587"},"modified":"2018-09-20T10:04:46","modified_gmt":"2018-09-20T09:04:46","slug":"kent-in-fight-against-parasites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/biosciences\/2014\/04\/14\/kent-in-fight-against-parasites\/","title":{"rendered":"Kent in fight against parasites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University&#8217;s School of Biosciences is to play a major role in a global project to develop new drugs to combat parasites.<\/p>\n<p>A Kent-based team led by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/bio\/profiles\/staff\/brown.html\">Professor David Brown<\/a>\u00a0will be part of a four-year, multi-centre research programme funded by the European Union. The programme will focus on neglected parasitic diseases (NPDs) &#8211; classified as &#8216;neglected&#8217; because investment in finding cures for these illnesses is extremely low, despite their devastating impact on human and veterinary health. A cause of this drug development standstill is a lack of financial incentive and low return on investment for the pharmaceutical industry.<\/p>\n<p>The project titled PDE4NPD (PhosphoDiEsterase inhibitors to target Neglected Parasitic Diseases) will focus specifically on Chagas\u2019 disease, human African trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis and schistosomiasis.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Brown is Programme Director for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/bio\/study\/postgraduate\/master\/drug_design.html\">MSc Drug Design<\/a>.
