Check out our courses and visit us at our Postgraduate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/bio\/study\/postgraduate\/openday.html\">Open Day<\/a>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1626\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/biosciences\/files\/2017\/02\/IMG_9575-resize-800.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/biosciences\/files\/2017\/02\/IMG_9575-resize-800.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/biosciences\/files\/2017\/02\/IMG_9575-resize-800-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/biosciences\/files\/2017\/02\/IMG_9575-resize-800-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>Research undertaken by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/bio\/study\/postgraduate\/\">postgraduate Master&#8217;s<\/a> students in\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/bio\/\">School of Biosciences<\/a> at the University of Kent\u00a0has been published in the journal <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/\">PLOS One<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The study, investigating mechanisms of cellular resistance to platinum-based drugs in neuroblastoma, was the result of collaborative team research by students undertaking the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/226\/cancer-biology\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">MSc Cancer Biology<\/span><\/u><\/a>. Each student, working on an independent project, contributed specific data as part of\u00a0an extended research project that forms part of the course.<\/p>\n<p>The collective cancer research project was coordinated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/bio\/profiles\/staff\/michaelis.html\">Prof. Martin Michaelis<\/a>, with the support of academic staff that work in the cancer area. The aim was to use the breadth of cancer research expertise among academic staff within the School of Biosciences, with students paired with academic supervisors\u00a0to explore cellular drug resistance pathways through\u00a0multiple modes of investigation. These included analysis of\u00a0cellular viability, cytogenetics, cellular migration, cross-resistance profiling, proteomics, cell cycle regulation, cellular metabolism\u00a0and\u00a0signalling pathways,\u00a0to develop\u00a0an overall model\u00a0for acquired platinum drug resistance in neuroblastoma cell lines. Supported by\u00a0academic supervisors and PhD students within the School, all 15 students on the MSc Cancer Biology contributed original data\u00a0to the study and are co-authors of the publication.<\/p>\n<p>These students &#8211; now graduates of the MSc Cancer Biology &#8211; have since taken on a range\u00a0PhD studentships, research assistant and clinical trial roles at institutions that\u00a0include the\u00a0Universities of Bath, Cambridge, Canterbury Christchurch and Southampton,\u00a0Imperial College, King&#8217;s College London, Viapath and Novartis.
