{"id":222,"date":"2023-12-04T13:43:30","date_gmt":"2023-12-04T13:43:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/biosciences-library-guide\/?page_id=222"},"modified":"2024-02-06T10:09:17","modified_gmt":"2024-02-06T10:09:17","slug":"referencing","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/biosciences-library-guide\/referencing\/","title":{"rendered":"Referencing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You will need to cite research in your work through academic referencing.<\/p>\n<p>This means acknowledging the sources you use:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0in the body of your work, referred to as a citation or in-text referencing<\/li>\n<li>as a list of all citations at the end, referred to as a bibliography or reference list<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The idea is that someone reading your work can identify and find the sources you&#8217;ve used for themselves so they have to include essential information about that source. There are many different styles used for laying out the information for a reference.<\/p>\n<p>The referencing style used by Biosciences is usually <a href=\"https:\/\/www-citethemrightonline-com.chain.kent.ac.uk\/article?docid=b-9781350928060&amp;tocid=b-9781350928060-the-vancouver-referencing-system\">Vancouver style <\/a>\u00a0but check with your module convenor.<\/p>\n<h3>Finding the reference information for a resource.<\/h3>\n<p>A physical source will have all the information you need on the front and title pages but most sources you use will be digital.<\/p>\n<p>When searching for ebooks, journal articles and other academic papers you will usually find a &#8220;citation&#8221; that you copy and paste into your work.<\/p>\n<p>For websites, podcasts, blogs and other media you will have to create a citation from the information given.<\/p>\n<h3>How to reference books, articles, journals, etc<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/library-it\/your-digital-library\/digital-resources-directory\/70\/cite-them-right\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Cite them Right<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is an interactive referencing tool to help you get to grips with the basics of referencing. Here you can learn how to<a href=\"https:\/\/www-citethemrightonline-com.chain.kent.ac.uk\/category-list?docid=CTRVancouver\"> reference anything in your chosen reference style<\/a> from books, articles, websites, videos, to social media posts in your research.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>You will need to be logged into Cite Them Right to view their referencing guides!<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Make an appointment to discuss referencing<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Student Learning Advisory Service can also support you with\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/guides\/plagiarism-and-how-to-avoid-it\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">referencing and avoiding plagiarism<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
