{"id":610,"date":"2021-11-19T07:35:47","date_gmt":"2021-11-19T07:35:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/athenaswan-news\/?p=610"},"modified":"2021-11-19T07:35:47","modified_gmt":"2021-11-19T07:35:47","slug":"international-mens-day-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/athenaswan-news\/?p=610","title":{"rendered":"International Men\u2019s Day 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>International Men&#8217;s Day is\u00a0<strong>a way to highlight awareness for men&#8217;s health and mental health<\/strong>, as well as to promote gender equality and celebrate male role models.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The three core themes for International Men\u2019s Day in the UK are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Making a positive difference to the wellbeing and lives of men and boys<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Raising awareness and\/or funds for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ukmensday.org.uk\/supporters\/\">charities\u00a0<\/a>supporting men and boys\u2019 wellbeing<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Promoting a positive conversation about men, manhood and masculinity<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>These core themes help to address some of the issues that affect\u00a0men and boys such as:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The high male suicide rate<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The challenges faced by boys and men at all stages of education and work including attainment, re-training, redundancy and unemployment<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Men\u2019s health (including male cancers), shorter life expectancy and workplace deaths \u2013 plus the health impact of Covid-19<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The challenges faced by the most marginalised men and boys in society (for instance, homeless men, boys in care, school exclusions and the high rate of male deaths in custody)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Male victims of violence, including sexual violence<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The challenges faced by men as parents, particularly new fathers and separated fathers<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Male victims and survivors of sexual abuse, rape, sexual exploitation, domestic abuse, forced marriage, honour-based crime, stalking and slavery<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The negative portrayal of men, boys and fathers<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Key statistics on the above can be found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ukmensday.org.uk\/key-facts\/\">here<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mental Health Support at the University <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With this year\u2019s core themes in mind it is appropriate to draw attention to what mental health support the University has in place for helping its staff and students.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Staff can contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/safety\/oh\/EAP%20-%20Care%20first\/Employee%20Assistance%20programme%20Care%20first.html\">Employee Assistance Programme<\/a><\/li>\n<li>There is more resources by the Occupational Health and Wellbeing <a href=\"https:\/\/livekentac.sharepoint.com\/sites\/MentalHealthSupport\/SitePages\/Mental-health-and-wellbeing-Supporting.aspx\">Support when you&#8217;re struggling (sharepoint.com)<\/a> (for Staff)<\/li>\n<li>HR-T&amp;OD Staff Training and EDI Forum Teams Channels are updated continuously with new material (for Staff)<\/li>\n<li>Students can contact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/student-support\">Student Support &amp; Wellbeing<\/a> who can offer mental health support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to the above the Talent and Organisational Development team has been developing specific training and support in this area, including: Mental Health Allies Programme and Wellbeing Toolkit. Further information coming soon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mental Health Charter Mark <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Student Support and Wellbeing is leading the mental health charter mark work. They are currently reviewing their services and are now one of the founding members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/universitymentalhealthcharter.org.uk\/\">University Mental Health Charter<\/a> run by Student Minds. The University is now on a 2 year journey, working towards accreditation for the charter award. This is a whole university approach and the University is looking for staff and students to be a part of the journey which will look at Mental Health across all areas of the University.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, Mind have put together a short guide: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mind.org.uk\/workplace\/mental-health-at-work\/\">Taking care of yourself and your staff<\/a> which may be of interest\/help. He was a history lecturer at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad Tobago.
