{"id":174,"date":"2017-05-30T15:57:34","date_gmt":"2017-05-30T14:57:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/athenaswan-news\/?p=174"},"modified":"2017-05-30T15:59:25","modified_gmt":"2017-05-30T14:59:25","slug":"significant-rise-in-female-professorships-at-kent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/athenaswan-news\/?p=174","title":{"rendered":"Significant rise in female professorships at Kent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Text by Gary Hughes,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/news\/kentlife\/13846\/significant-rise-in-female-professorships-at-kent\"> Campus Online<\/a>, May 26\/2017)<\/p>\n<p>As reported by <em>Times Higher Education <\/em>(THE), the University has increased its proportion of women professors to <strong>27.2%<\/strong>, a <strong>rise of 8.2%<\/strong> since the last survey in 2012-13.<\/p>\n<p>This, according to new Higher Education Statistics Agency figures obtained by the THE, places Kent <strong>well above the national average of 24%<\/strong> and at the <strong>top<\/strong> of those institutions to have achieved an increase.<\/p>\n<p>Kent has for many years been committed to advancing <strong>gender equality<\/strong> in academia. It set up its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/hr-equalityanddiversity\/networks\/women-network.html\">Women\u2019s Network<\/a> in 2004 and through its participation in a range of national schemes and initiatives, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/human-resources\/athenaswan\/index.html\">Athena SWAN<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/human-resources\/athenaswan\/learning-and-development\/aurora.html\">Aurora<\/a>, has sought to address the absence of women from senior academic and professorial roles, as well as those in professional service positions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/athenaswan-news\/files\/2017\/05\/flyer-close.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-176\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/athenaswan-news\/files\/2017\/05\/flyer-close-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/athenaswan-news\/files\/2017\/05\/flyer-close-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/athenaswan-news\/files\/2017\/05\/flyer-close-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/athenaswan-news\/files\/2017\/05\/flyer-close-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/athenaswan-news\/files\/2017\/05\/flyer-close.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the news, the University\u2019s Vice-Chancellor and President <strong>Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow<\/strong> said: \u2018The recruitment, retention and recognition of women in higher education and at Kent, in particular, is an important part of the <strong>University\u2019s mission<\/strong>.
