International Women’s Day is around the corner and this year the theme is ‘Choose to Challenge’.
“A challenged world is an alert world and from challenge comes change. So let’s all choose to challenge. How will you help forge a gender equal world? Celebrate women’s achievement. Raise awareness against bias. Take action for equality.” #IWD2021
We would like to ask you to share any ‘everyday’ topics, themes and stereotypes there are. We would like you to take some time and think, some might not even be that obvious. What type of stereotypes can you think? You might have grown up and learned some biases that just shape the way you think. A good example is the one where children are asked to draw scientists and choose one gender over another for these professions.
Another example is this riddle:
A father and son get in a car crash and are rushed to the hospital. The father dies. The boy is taken to the operating room and the surgeon says, “I can’t operate on this boy, because he’s my son.”
How is this possible? 40-75% of people can’t solve this riddle because they’re unable to imagine the surgeon is a woman. The surgeon is the boy’s mother.
Please join us sharing your everyday stereotypes! Tweet them or email them to us – tag @EDIKent and #choosetochallenge together with #IWD2021.
