Started in Mexico in 1969, the Congress of Women and Journalists and Writers have met every two years and 2018 saw their first ever visit to the UK.
The four-day programme was hosted by the BBC, City University, Google labs and the University of Kent and delivered a packed agenda of interviews and panel discussions on themes relating to diversity, gender equality, work culture and the future of story-telling in a digital age.
The Athena SWAN were delighted to sponsor eight female journalism students based outside the South East to attend the Congress recognising that so many journalism events and opportunities are less accessible to those outside London.
The experiences discussed during the four days reflected those we see in our Athena SWAN gender equality work – the need to make inclusivity part of everyday practice and not an optional extra, the importance of bringing men into gender equality conversations and most of all, the power of sharing stories.
