You could also work in a specialised area, for example, as a political journalist.<\/p>\n<p>Newspaper journalist &#8211; investigate and write up stories for local, regional and national newspapers. Newspaper or magazine editor &#8211; Manage the style and content of printed publications.<\/p>\n<p>Public Relations Officer \u2013 You would be responsible for managing an organisation\u2019s image and reputation.<\/p>\n<p>Radio Broadcast Assistant \u2013 You would carry out administration tasks to make sure that live and recordings were carried out smoothly.<\/p>\n<p>Translator \u2013 As a translator, you would need to interpret text, converting the written word from the \u2018source language\u2019 into the \u2018target language\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Skills Needed<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Excellent communication and presentation skills<br \/>\n&#8211; Excellent grammar and spelling<br \/>\n&#8211; Commitment and persistence<br \/>\n&#8211; Ability to generate original ideas<br \/>\n&#8211; A broad range of interests, including current affairs<br \/>\n&#8211; Good research and interviewing skills<br \/>\n&#8211; Good organisation skills<br \/>\n&#8211; Initiative<br \/>\n&#8211; Decisiveness<br \/>\n&#8211; Team-working skills<br \/>\n&#8211; Creativity and problem-solving skills<br \/>\n&#8211; Analytical skills<br \/>\n&#8211; Multimedia skills<\/p>\n<p><strong>Experience Required<\/strong><br \/>\nAny degree subject; however, if you are interested in a specific type of journalism, such as politics, obtaining a relevant degree such as Politics and International Relations will demonstrate your interest and knowledge of the subject.<\/p>\n<p>Some roles will also require trainees to have completed a National Council for the Training of Journalist\u2019s qualification prior to application. If you have a degree you may be able to complete the 18 week fast track NCTJ Diploma. The NCTJ&#8217;s Diploma in Journalism reflects the multimedia environment of modern journalism and includes mandatory modules on reporting, essential public affairs and media law, and shorthand.
