HR professionals aim to make the most effective use of the people within an organisation.<\/p>\n<p>Human Resource Management involves\u00a0organisation and manpower planning, creating solutions, recruitment and selection, termination of employment, training and development, industrial relations, job evaluation and employee services.<\/p>\n<h2>Types of roles<\/h2>\n<p>The various career options within HR are outlined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cipd.co.uk\/careers\/career-options\">here<\/a>. A scientific or technical background can be an asset in some organisations.<\/p>\n<p>There are three main routes for graduates into HR:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Through a <strong>graduate training scheme<\/strong>. This will help you to gain relevant experience that will allow you to progress in your career. Jobs may be advertised in the local press, through recruitment agencies or through websites for specialist industry sectors such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jobsgopublic.com\/\">Jobsgopublic <\/a>for the public sector.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Types of organisations<\/h2>\n<p>Any employer with a sufficient number of employees to justify a specialist personnel section may employ HR managers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>manufacturing or service industries<\/li>\n<li>local government<\/li>\n<li>health authorities<\/li>\n<li>universities and colleges<\/li>\n<li>commercial organisations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Skills &amp; Experience<\/h2>\n<p>Qualities required include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Resilience and persistence, with an ability to handle pressure<\/li>\n<li>An analytical, often procedural, approach<\/li>\n<li>Tactful with an ability to form good working relationships and apply effective interpersonal skills when dealing with people of differing levels of seniority<\/li>\n<li>Commercial awareness<\/li>\n<li>Well-organised, flexible and numerate<\/li>\n<li>Ability to persuade and negotiate, influence, listen and question<\/li>\n<li>Excellent\u00a0communication\u00a0skills<\/li>\n<li>Integrity and approachability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Large multi-national organisations in a broad range of sectors usually offer HR internships. In previous years <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nestle.com\/jobs\/career-area\/internships\">Nestle<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lloydsbankinggrouptalent.com\/undergraduates\/summer-internships\/\">Lloyds Banking Group<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/careers.edfenergy.com\/content\/Internships-and-Industrial-Placements\/?locale=en_GB\">EDF Energy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/careers.jpmorgan.com\/us\/en\/students\">J.P.Morgan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pgcareers.com\/internships\">P&amp;G<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldmansachs.com\/careers\/students\/programs\/\">Goldman Sachs<\/a> have offered work experience opportunities.\u00a0Experience\u00a0relevant to personnel work can also be gained in other related fields, particularly\u00a0retail management\u00a0and\u00a0recruitment consultancy.<\/p>\n<p>Competition for vacancies in HR is great\u00a0and applicants therefore need to be strongly motivated towards this work; to demonstrate that they have considered what the work is likely to involve and whether they are personally suited.
