{"id":632,"date":"2014-10-14T13:53:08","date_gmt":"2014-10-14T13:53:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/?p=632"},"modified":"2014-10-14T13:53:08","modified_gmt":"2014-10-14T13:53:08","slug":"film65","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/2014\/10\/14\/film65\/","title":{"rendered":"Film65"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of the 50th Anniversary Celebrations, The School of Arts are teaming up with The Gulbenkian to bring you &#8216;Film65,&#8217; A yearlong series of films all made in 1965, each introduced by a name speaker.<\/p>\n<p>1965 was a year when era-defining singles like The Beatles\u2019 \u2018Ticket to Ride\u2019 and \u2018Help!\u2019 , and the Stones\u2019 \u2018Satisfaction\u2019 and \u2018Get Off Of My Cloud\u2019, were outsold by The Seekers\u2019 \u2018I\u2019ll Never Find Another You\u2019 and Ken Dodd\u2019s \u2018Tears\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The No.1 album spot was shared exclusively between seven LPs: \u2018Beatles for Sale\u2019, \u2018Help!\u2019, \u2018Rubber Soul\u2019, \u2018The Rolling Stones No.2\u2019, \u2018The Freewheelin\u2019 Bob Dylan\u2019, \u2018Bringing It All Back Home\u2019 \u2026 and the original soundtrack to \u2018The Sound of Music\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The highest-grossing films were \u2018The Sound of Music\u2019, \u2018Doctor Zhivago\u2019 and \u2018Thunderball\u2019, with \u2018What\u2019s New Pussycat?\u2019, \u2018Von Ryan\u2019s Express\u2019 and Disney\u2019s \u2018That Darn Cat!\u2019 not far behind.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Film65<\/strong> will capture the essence of what it was like at that time to go to see a film at your local Rialto, Regal or Essoldo. Perhaps you walked through the winter slush, a copy of \u2018Freewheelin\u2019\u2019 under one arm and the other around your Suze Rotolo lookalike girlfriend. What films might you have seen on the big screen?<\/p>\n<p>The season will reflect both commercial and art-house successes of the year. It\u2019s an eye-opening cross-section, recording the impact of spaghetti westerns like \u2018For A Few Dollars More\u2019, spy movies such as \u2018The Ipcress File\u2019, and the work of young European auteurs like Milos Forman, Jean-Luc Godard and Roman Polanski.
