Internships undertaken in museums and galleries can be a great way for students or\u00a0those entering the profession to gain career-enhancing experience, to network and\u00a0make connections, and to develop their skills. On the other hand, they can also feel
\nexploitative for those making unpaid, yet significant, contributions to the running of\u00a0an organisation. Such desirable opportunities may also seem out of reach for those unable to afford prolonged periods of voluntary work.<\/p>\n
This seminar will explore the issues surrounding internships through a series of talks from speakers in the museum sector, those who have undertaken internships, and through a round table discussion.<\/p>\n
How do museums and galleries negotiate the issue of internships in an increasingly\u00a0competitive sector, where public spending cuts are creating a greater need for volunteers while reducing the prospect of paid employment at the end of the internship? What is the status of interns in relation to volunteers, workers and trainees? What should the relationship between universities and museums be in sponsoring internships?<\/p>\n
This seminar is organised by the AAH Museums & Exhibitions group, in collaboration with the AAH students group.
