{"id":5048,"date":"2022-03-01T11:07:30","date_gmt":"2022-03-01T11:07:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/?p=5048"},"modified":"2022-03-01T11:07:30","modified_gmt":"2022-03-01T11:07:30","slug":"new-arts-project-will-examine-histories-of-gender-play-in-music-hall-and-pantomime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/2022\/03\/01\/new-arts-project-will-examine-histories-of-gender-play-in-music-hall-and-pantomime\/","title":{"rendered":"New arts project will examine histories of gender play in music hall and pantomime"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kent is delighted to announce that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\">School of Arts<\/a> has received funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/councils\/ahrc\/\">Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)<\/a>,\u00a0part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/\">UK Research and Innovation<\/a>, for a collaborative research and public engagement project titled Beyond the Binary.<\/p>\n<p>This project\u00a0will examine the histories of gender play and presentation currently unexplored in Kent\u2019s music hall and pantomime collections. Specifically, researchers will analyse the Max Tyler Music Hall collection (which includes 2000+ song sheets) and the David Drummond Pantomime collection which includes extensive scripts, costume and set designs.<\/p>\n<p>The project will involve working with researchers and performance-makers from across the gender spectrum \u2013 including queer, gender-fluid and non-binary people \u2013 to uncover and share new understandings and perspectives on performance and gender in the past.<\/p>\n<p>The project also aims to engage new audiences with diverse, inclusive histories of performance and gender, and thereby contribute constructively to current discourse around gender expression.<\/p>\n<p>Led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/people\/530\/brooks-helen\">Dr Helen Brooks<\/a> (Reader in Theatre and Cultural History) in the School of Arts, with support from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/people\/544\/double-oliver\">Dr Oliver Double<\/a> (Reader in Drama and Theatre) and Karen Brayshaw (Manager of Kent\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/library-it\/special-collections\">Special Collections &amp; Archives<\/a>), the project findings will be shared through a creative public engagement programme in Summer 2022.
