Shona Illingworth<\/a>, artist and Reader in Arts at the School of Arts<\/a>, and\u00a0<\/span>Professor Nick Grief<\/a> of Kent Law School<\/a> will both speak at the Toronto Hearing of The Airspace Tribunal, which will begin on 1 November 2020, via Zoom.<\/p>\n

The Airspace Tribunal<\/a> is an international public forum established by Shona and Nick in 2018. In a series of public hearings – London, Sydney, now Toronto, with further hearings to come in other parts of the world \u2013 this people\u2019s tribunal is examining the impact of accelerating geopolitical, technological and environmental change on the composition, nature and use of airspace, and considering the case for and against a proposed new human right to protect all people from physical or psychological threats from above.<\/p>\n

The Airspace Tribunal\u2019s inaugural hearing took place at Doughty Street Chambers<\/a>, London in September 2018. Each hearing is being recorded and transcribed to form the drafting history of the proposed new human right.<\/p>\n

The Toronto hearing of the Airspace Tribunal is co-presented by The Power Plant<\/a> and the Master of Visual Studies program at the Daniels Faculty, University of Toronto.\u202f Speakers from a broad range of expertise, disciplines and lived experience \u2013 including Climate Change, Human Rights, Artificial Intelligence, Geopolitics, Contemporary Warfare, Biopolitics and Psychology – will consider whether we need increased protection from threats from above through the recognition of this proposed new human right.<\/p>\n

The hearing will take place over three 2-hour online panel discussions followed by a 1-hour online summative session. The Power Plant\u2019s Director, Ga\u00ebtane Verna, will be the Chair, introducing each session and all speakers. Counsel to the Tribunal, Kirsty Brimelow QC of Doughty Street Chambers (London, UK), will pose questions to the Experts. Members of the audience \u2013 our judges \u2013 will also be able to ask questions.<\/p>\n

The Toronto Hearing will take place on the following dates, at Toronto – Eastern Standard Time’, and will take place via Zoom. All events are free to attend:<\/p>\n
