{"id":3363,"date":"2020-02-26T16:01:19","date_gmt":"2020-02-26T16:01:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/?p=3363"},"modified":"2020-02-26T16:01:19","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T16:01:19","slug":"nostalgia-podcast-with-murray-smith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/2020\/02\/26\/nostalgia-podcast-with-murray-smith\/","title":{"rendered":"Nostalgia podcast with Murray Smith"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"left-column\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-auto ml-sm-auto mbm\">\n<div class=\"btn-group\">Professor Murray Smith, Professor in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/subjects\/film\">Film<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/\">School of Arts<\/a>, is the subject of the latest podcast on \u2018Nostalgia\u2019, as part of an ongoing project by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/thrs\/staff\/deacy.html\">Dr Chris Deacy<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/thrs\/index.html\">Department of Religious Studies<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"description hyphenation mbm user-html-content-container clearfix pos-rel mbm\">\n<div>\n<p>In the epsiode, Chris and Murray talk about the concept of \u2018trading places\u2019 in academia and about how love is part of how Murray ended up at Kent and whether we\u2019d be the same people now if we\u2019d made different choices at 18.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Murray grew up in Potters Bar and he talks about what he did in response to his environment being quite culturally barren. His parents were born in the 1920s and they had children relatively late, and we discuss the concepts of \u2018Protestant frugality\u2019 and \u2018rebellion through conformity\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>We learn that Murray has fragmented memories of his earliest years and we talk about the difficulty of distinguishing memories from old photos. Murray discusses how 14-16 are quite formative ages and we learn that music was and still is the most important form of culture (more than film) for him.
