On Being a Comedian<\/em> (1997),<em> Britain Had Talent: A History of Variety Theatre<\/em> (2012), and <em>Getting the Joke: the Inner Workings of Stand-Up Comedy<\/em> (2nd edition, 2014). Among the modules he teaches at Kent are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/modules\/module\/DR676\">Stand Up Comedy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/modules\/module\/DR594\">Popular Performance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the episode, he talks about teaching students comedy, double acts, and the art of making stand-up comedy look spontaneous. \u2018Stand up is a pretence, like it\u2019s just a conversation.
