{"id":2961,"date":"2019-10-15T15:11:01","date_gmt":"2019-10-15T14:11:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/?p=2961"},"modified":"2019-10-17T14:10:18","modified_gmt":"2019-10-17T13:10:18","slug":"alumna-and-author-jane-giles-to-give-talk-on-scala-cinema","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/2019\/10\/15\/alumna-and-author-jane-giles-to-give-talk-on-scala-cinema\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumna and author Jane Giles to give talk on Scala Cinema"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday 16 October 2019, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/research\/centres.html\">Histories: Art, Drama and Film Research Group<\/a> at the School of Arts is delighted to host Jane Giles, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/17\/film\">MA Film<\/a> alumna and author, who will give a talk entitled &#8216;From Canterbury to King&#8217;s Cross (and Back): A Film Programmer&#8217;s Tale&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>A Masters student at the University of Kent from 1986-87, Jane&#8217;s first job was as film programmer at the notorious and influential Scala cinema from 1988 to 1992. Famous for its iconic venue in London\u2019s Kings Cross, the cinema was modelled on American style \u2018repertory houses\u2019\u00a0and showed a mix of Hollywood classics and cult movies, horror, Kung Fu, LGBT, animation, silent comedy, Psychotronic and unclassifiable films, often in double bills.
