{"id":2700,"date":"2019-08-13T15:19:50","date_gmt":"2019-08-13T14:19:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/?p=2700"},"modified":"2019-08-13T15:29:55","modified_gmt":"2019-08-13T14:29:55","slug":"incels-documentary-featuring-kaitlyn-regehr-attracts-press-interest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/2019\/08\/13\/incels-documentary-featuring-kaitlyn-regehr-attracts-press-interest\/","title":{"rendered":"Incels documentary featuring Kaitlyn Regehr attracts press interest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are pleased to report that the documentary <span style=\"float: none;background-color: transparent;color: #333333;cursor: text;font-family: 'Helvetica Neue',Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;font-size: 14px;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;font-weight: 400;letter-spacing: normal;text-align: left;text-decoration: none;text-indent: 0px;text-transform: none\">\u2018Inside the Secret World of Incels\u2019, <\/span>featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/people\/academic-staff\/regehr.html\">Dr Kaitlyn Regehr<\/a>, Lecturer in Media Studies in the School of Arts, has attracted a large amount of media interest.<\/p>\n<p>The documentary, which also features <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/undergraduate\/1901\/media-studies\">Media Studies<\/a> students participating in a seminar about social media, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/newsandevents\/index.html?view=2608\">debuted in July 2019<\/a> on BBC1 and BBC3.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Inside the Secret World of Incels\u2019 explores the online subculture of \u2018incels\u2019 (the word being a portmanteau of \u2018involuntary celibate\u2019) who promote hatred, misogyny and racism, and have been linked to hate crimes and mass murders. It explores the how online ideology can push people into extreme behaviour and considers the reasons why this may occur, including mental health issues and trauma.<\/p>\n<p>After online broadcast, the documentary received extensive press coverage, from UK based sources, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/men\/relationships\/life-british-incel-removed-misogynistic-movement\/\">T<em>he Telegraph<\/em><\/a>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/culture\/whats-on-tv-sunday-83rc25cm5\">The Times<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/femail\/article-7237213\/Inside-secret-world-Incels-young-men-never-sex-turn-violence-murder.html\">Mail Online<\/a><\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailystar.co.uk\/news\/latest-news\/791333\/incels-involuntary-celibates-reddit-elliot-rodger-alek-minassian-bbc-three\"><em> Daily Star<\/em>,<\/a> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/tv\/tv-news\/inside-secret-world-incels-who-17796603\">Mirror Online<\/a><\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BuzzFeedUK\/status\/1149409498076987393\">Buzzfeed UK<\/a>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/17784437.barry-didcock-39-s-tv-review-inside-secret-world-incels-bbc-three\/\">The National<\/a><\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/theartsdesk.com\/tv\/inside-secret-world-incels-bbc-one-review-involuntary-celibacy-violence-and-despair\">The Arts Desk<\/a>, and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/arts_ents\/17784438.barry-didcock-39-s-tv-review-inside-secret-world-incels-bbc-three\/\">The Herald<\/a><\/em>, as well as from overseas media, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/07\/12\/documentary-explores-the-twisted-world-of-women-hating-incels\/\"><em>New York Post<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #2a6496\" href=\"https:\/\/www.refinery29.com\/en-gb\/2019\/07\/237264\/inside-the-secret-world-of-incels-bbc-three\">Refinery29<\/a>, <em><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio-web\/inside-the-secret-world-of-incels-misogyny-murder-and-cowardice-1.3973980\">The Irish Times<\/a><\/em>, <em><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.ie\/tvandshowbiz\/tv\/4325376\/new-bbc-documentary-explores-the-bizarre-world-of-an-irish-incel-who-admires-us-mass-murderer-elliot-rodger\/\">The Irish Sun<\/a><\/em>, <a style=\"background-color: #ffffff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/entertainment\/2019\/0731\/1066243-whats-on-tv-highlights-for-wednesday-july-31\/\">RTE<\/a>, and <em><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.derstandard.de\/story\/2000106342178\/sexueller-frustration-frauenhasser-bbc-doku-zeigt-die-geheime-welt-der\">Der Standard<\/a><\/em>. In addition, Kaitlyn has been interviewed by <a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;color: #2a6496\" href=\"https:\/\/graziadaily.co.uk\/life\/in-the-news\/how-to-stop-incel-community\/\">Grazia<\/a> and <a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;color: #2a6496\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/film-tv\/article\/45251\/1\/incel-culture-forums-bbc-three-documentary\">Dazed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Refinery29 said: &#8216;Unlike much existing coverage of the incel movement, &#8216;Inside The Secret World Of Incels&#8217; explains <em>why<\/em> so many men feel bitter and hateful enough towards women that they&#8217;re willing to kill innocent people and even themselves (as in the case of Rodger) for their &#8217;cause&#8217;.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The documentary contains strong language and some disturbing scenes.
