{"id":2528,"date":"2019-06-20T09:05:14","date_gmt":"2019-06-20T08:05:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/?p=2528"},"modified":"2019-06-20T12:37:54","modified_gmt":"2019-06-20T11:37:54","slug":"phd-student-daniel-bendelman-publishes-in-disability-and-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/2019\/06\/20\/phd-student-daniel-bendelman-publishes-in-disability-and-society\/","title":{"rendered":"PhD student Daniel Bendelman publishes in Disability and Society"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations to Daniel Bendelman, currently studying for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/280\/drama-practice-as-research\">PhD in Drama by Practice as Research<\/a>, who has just contributed to a co-authored paper in the journal <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/loi\/cdso20\">Disability &amp; Society<\/a> <\/em>(Vol 34, 2019), entitled \u2018Doing it Differently: Emancipatory Autism Studies Within a Neurodiverse Academic Space\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><em>Disability &amp; Society<\/em> is an international journal exploring issues such as human rights, discrimination, definitions, policy and practices. The article is part of a special issue on \u2018Disability, Activism and the Academy: Time for Renewal?\u2019 and Daniel contributed as part of a team of six authors.<\/p>\n<p>In the current research climate, in which many autistic and autism communities are increasingly calling for a move towards collaborative forms of research, we consider how a loosely formed academic community may serve to challenge \u2018business as usual\u2019 in the university environment. Mindful of the need to move beyond theory, the authors use their experience to consider how knowledge about autism and neurotypicality can be meaningfully (co)-produced, and made available both to the research community and also to autistic and autism communities.<\/p>\n<p>The article explores how autistic experience may trouble normative meanings of academic knowledge production.
