{"id":227,"date":"2014-01-20T14:56:20","date_gmt":"2014-01-20T14:56:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/?p=227"},"modified":"2014-01-20T14:56:21","modified_gmt":"2014-01-20T14:56:21","slug":"bafta-nomination-for-kent-filmmaker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/2014\/01\/20\/bafta-nomination-for-kent-filmmaker\/","title":{"rendered":"BAFTA nomination for Kent filmmaker"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The latest film by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/staff-profiles\/profiles\/film\/barnard.html\" target=\"_blank\">Clio Barnard<\/a>, Reader in Film at the University of Kent, has been nominated in the <a href=\"http:\/\/awards.bafta.org\/award\/2014\/film\/outstanding-british-film\" target=\"_blank\">Outstanding British Film in 2014 category by BAFTA<\/a>\u00a0(The British Academy of Film and Television Arts).<\/p>\n<p>Titled \u2018The Selfish Giant\u2019, the film shares a category with some of the past year\u2019s most well-known releases from across the world, including, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Saving Mr Banks, Philomena, and Gravity \u2013 all featuring some of the industry\u2019s highest profile and world-leading actors.<\/p>\n<p>Described as a \u201cstunningly impressive piece of film-making\u201d and \u201ca brilliant and soul-scouring fable\u201d since its general release on 25 October 2013, \u2018The Selfish Giant\u2019 is an adaptation of Oscar Wilde\u2019s famous short story of the same name. Now set in a housing estate in Bradford, it tells the tale of two outcast teenage boys who get caught up in the world of copper theft.<\/p>\n<p>The nomination at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bafta.org\/film\/awards\/\" target=\"_blank\">BAFTA Film Awards<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u00a0<\/span>for The Selfish Giant follows exceptional reviews by film critics in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/culture\/film\/10063353\/Cannes-2013-The-Selfish-Giant-review.html\" target=\"_blank\">Daily Telegraph<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/goingout\/film\/the-selfish-giant--film-review-8903609.html\" target=\"_blank\">Evening Standard<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2013\/oct\/24\/the-selfish-giant-review\" target=\"_blank\">The Guardian<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/reviews\/reviewcomplete.asp?FID=138327%20\" target=\"_blank\">Empire<\/a>, and many others.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to its general release, it was also chosen as one of only two films to represent the UK in the Directors\u2019 Fortnight line-up at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival (15 \u2013 26 May), and was also shown at the 2013 London Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p>The Selfish Giant follows Barnard\u2019s critically acclaimed debut feature, The Arbor (2010) which won several awards. Clio Barnard also received a BAFTA nomination for Outstanding Debut Award in 2011.
