{"id":2042,"date":"2019-02-08T15:26:09","date_gmt":"2019-02-08T15:26:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/?p=2042"},"modified":"2019-02-08T15:49:16","modified_gmt":"2019-02-08T15:49:16","slug":"konstantinos-gravanis-wins-internship-in-the-vaticans-raphael-rooms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/2019\/02\/08\/konstantinos-gravanis-wins-internship-in-the-vaticans-raphael-rooms\/","title":{"rendered":"Konstantinos Gravanis wins internship in the Vatican\u2019s Raphael Rooms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kostas\u00a0Gravanis, who is undertaking a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/100\/history-and-philosophy-of-art\">PhD in History and Philosophy of Art<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/\">School of Arts<\/a>, has just been accepted for a\u00a0six-month\u00a0internship in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.museivaticani.va\/\">Vatican Museums<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Vatican Museums offer an education and training programme for young specialists and students in restoration techniques. Each intern is assigned to a specific project involved in the museum\u2019s activities.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in\u00a0April, Kostas will be working in the area of the Stanze di Raffaello (Raphael Rooms).\u00a0The internship is directly related to Kostas\u2019 PhD research, as his project is provisionally entitled \u2018Sources, Functions and Meaning of Imagery in the Vatican&#8217;s Raphael Rooms\u2019. His PhD supervisors are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/people\/academic-staff\/henry.html\">Professor Tom Henry<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/people\/academic-staff\/thomas.html\">Dr Ben Thomas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Stanze\u00a0are a series of reception rooms\u00a0in the Vatican Palace, famous for their beautiful frescoes painted by Raphael and his workshop (1508-24). The internship will give Kostas the opportunity to get involved with projects for the forthcoming 500th anniversary of Raphael\u2019s death in Rome as well as with on-going restoration work\u00a0in the Sala di Costantino.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the internship, Kostas said: \u2018Working in the Stanze at this specific time is a great honour and privilege. The anticipation of Raphael year 2020 is a thrill beyond words while the restoration projects are revealing fascinating new aspects of Raphael\u2019s\u00a0art\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Tom Henry, Director of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/rome\/\">Rome School of Classical and Renaissance Studies<\/a>, also commented on Kostas&#8217; achievement: \u2018Kostas stood out on our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/1694\/history-of-art-rome\">MA in History of Art<\/a>\u00a0in Rome and developed his PhD topic while there.
