{"id":2005,"date":"2019-02-01T12:21:37","date_gmt":"2019-02-01T12:21:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/?p=2005"},"modified":"2019-02-05T16:35:45","modified_gmt":"2019-02-05T16:35:45","slug":"doctoral-student-leads-acting-taster-sessions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/2019\/02\/01\/doctoral-student-leads-acting-taster-sessions\/","title":{"rendered":"PhD student Stephen Atkins leads acting taster sessions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/postgraduate\/research-students.html\">Doctoral student<\/a> Stephen Atkins, who is undertaking a PhD in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/280\/drama-practice-as-research\">Drama: Practice as Research<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/index.html\">School of Arts<\/a>, has just been interviewed for the website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.offwestend.com\/\">OffWestEnd.com<\/a>, about\u00a0 setting up taster training sessions at <a href=\"https:\/\/albanytheatre.co.uk\/\">The Albany Theatre<\/a>, London, for The Other Acting School.<\/p>\n<p>OffWestEnd.com is a site that celebrates London\u2019s West End theatre scene.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen\u2019s thesis is entitled \u2018The Embodied Action Cycle: An Integrative Training, Rehearsal and Creation System for Actors\u2019, and is supervised by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/people\/academic-staff\/allain.html\">Professor Paul Allain<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/people\/academic-staff\/varakis-martin.html\">Dr Angeliki Varakis-Martin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I am a director but my real passion is teaching and researching actor training methods,\u2019 explains Stephen in the interview, before discussing the breadth of his interests. \u2018I bricolage as I go, and I encourage this in my students&#8211;to try new methods and find new ways of making them work together. I was originally trained in a physical method derived from Grotowski. Later, in Los Angeles and New York, I went deeply into text-based acting systems.
