It takes its name from the title of the painting by Ren\u00e9 Magritte.<\/p>\n<p>In the episode, Frances discusses her book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upress.umn.edu\/book-division\/books\/the-truth-is-always-grey\">The Truth is Always Grey: A History of Modernist Painting<\/a><\/em> (University of Minnesota Press, 2018).<\/p>\n<p>In particular, Frances considers the question of what grey is: \u2018It\u2019s such an interesting question. The way that it is spelt even \u2013 is it grey or gray \u2013 how do we even write grey, and what is it? There\u2019s this big question mark that sits over the colour grey\u2019, she explains, \u2018I think a lot of that is because we don\u2019t pay much attention to grey.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There\u2019s this assumption that grey is all about reflecting depression; and the metaphor I always give is\u00a0 the London sky, which is depressing and its gloomy, and we think of grey as describing the approach of death.
