{"id":1867,"date":"2019-01-04T16:23:47","date_gmt":"2019-01-04T16:23:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/?p=1867"},"modified":"2019-01-04T16:23:47","modified_gmt":"2019-01-04T16:23:47","slug":"podcast-on-rik-ben-and-andy-at-the-edinburgh-fringe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/2019\/01\/04\/podcast-on-rik-ben-and-andy-at-the-edinburgh-fringe\/","title":{"rendered":"Podcast on Rik, Ben and Andy at the Edinburgh Fringe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/people\/academic-staff\/double.html\">Dr Oliver Double<\/a>, Reader in Drama within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/index.html\">School of Arts<\/a> and Head of the Performance and Theatre Research Cluster, has released the latest episode of the podcast series &#8216;A History of Comedy in Several Objects&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>In the podcast series, Olly examines objects from Kent&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/standupcomedyarchive\/about\/\">British Stand-Up Comedy Archive<\/a> alongside Project Archivist Elspeth Millar.<\/p>\n<p>In the latest instalment, Olly and Elspeth examine the correspondence relating to a run of shows from the 1983 Edinburgh Fringe, featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0562201\/\">Rik Mayall<\/a>, Andy de la Tour and Ben Elton.<\/p>\n<p>The papers reveal the early days of stand-up comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe. \u2018In 1983 stand up at the Fringe was quite a new thing,\u2019 explains Olly, \u2018arguably the first uncontested (as it were) stand up show would have been Late Night Alternative with Alexei Sayle and Tony Allen.
