{"id":1828,"date":"2018-12-07T13:27:12","date_gmt":"2018-12-07T13:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/?p=1828"},"modified":"2019-05-22T14:20:09","modified_gmt":"2019-05-22T13:20:09","slug":"nicola-shaughnessy-interviewed-on-bbc-south-east-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/2018\/12\/07\/nicola-shaughnessy-interviewed-on-bbc-south-east-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Nicola Shaughnessy interviewed on BBC South East news"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/people\/academic-staff\/shaughnessy.html\">Nicola Shaughnessy<\/a>, Professor of Performance in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/index.html\">School of Arts<\/a>, featured on the BBC South East news last night, 6 December 2018, as part of her<a href=\"https:\/\/ahrc.ukri.org\/\"> Arts and Humanities Research Council<\/a> project \u2018Playing A\/Part\u2019. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/people\/academic-staff\/trimingham.html\">Dr Melissa Trimingham<\/a>, also from the School of Arts, was featured as a co-investigator, working a puppet with the autistic girls participating in the research.<\/p>\n<p>The project investigates the relationship between autism and gender through the use of interactive media and participatory arts.<\/p>\n<p>The news item discussed how autism has often been undetected in girls because it may present differently. It reports from <a href=\"https:\/\/limpsfieldgrange.co.uk\/\">Limpsfield Grange School<\/a> in Surrey, a specialist school for girls ages 11-16 with a range of autistic spectrum conditions, and where the Playing A\/Part project is being undertaken.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Autism in girls is under-diagnosed and under-represented because really we don\u2019t know what it looks like,\u2019 explains Nicola in the news item. &#8216;The team are hoping that through these creative approaches they will get a much better sense of the experience of autistic girls.\u2019 The team also includes Dr Hannah Newman who completed her interdisciplinary PhD in the School of Arts and is now the Post Doc for the project, working with psychologists at the University of Surrey.
