{"id":1748,"date":"2018-11-08T17:08:20","date_gmt":"2018-11-08T17:08:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/?p=1748"},"modified":"2019-05-22T14:15:45","modified_gmt":"2019-05-22T13:15:45","slug":"imagining-autism-features-on-itv-meridian-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/2018\/11\/08\/imagining-autism-features-on-itv-meridian-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Imagining Autism features on ITV Meridian news"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;color: #4a4a4a;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/people\/academic-staff\/trimingham.html\">Dr Melissa Trimingham<\/a>, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Drama and Theatre in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/index.html\">School of Arts<\/a>, was interviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/meridian\/\">ITV Meridian<\/a> news today regarding a residency at <a href=\"https:\/\/thebeacon.kent.sch.uk\">The Beacon<\/a>, a school in Folkestone, to engage children with autism in multisensory play.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;color: #4a4a4a;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">The initiative emerged from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrc.ukri.org\/\">Arts and Humanities Research Council<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/imaginingautism.org\/\">Imagining Autism<\/a> project, a collaboration between Melissa and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/people\/academic-staff\/shaughnessy.html\">Nicola Shaughnessy<\/a>, Professor of Performance in the Department of Drama and Theatre, and colleagues from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/\">School of Psychology<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/tizard\/\">Tizard Centre<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/thegulbenkian.co.uk\/\">Gulbenkian Theatre<\/a> to use drama, puppetry, sound and media, to engage children with autism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;color: #4a4a4a;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">The report coincided with a residency <\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">at The Beacon\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">which culminated in an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/learn.thebeacon.kent.sch.uk\/news\/imagining-autism-family-day\/\">Imagining Autism Family Day <\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0last Saturday, 3 November 2018, which featured the multisensory environment housed in the specially created \u2018pod\u2019 in which children engaged in an interactive imaginative story, travelling into space.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;color: #4a4a4a;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">The news report is available to watch online here:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/meridian\/update\/2018-11-08\/autism-an-out-of-this-world-experiment-in-kent\/\">www.itv.com\/news\/meridian\/update\/2018-11-08\/autism-an-out-of-this-world-experiment-in-kent\/<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;color: #4a4a4a;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;color: #4a4a4a;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr Melissa Trimingham, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Drama and Theatre in the School of Arts, was interviewed by ITV Meridian news today regarding &hellip;
