{"id":1672,"date":"2018-09-21T16:31:17","date_gmt":"2018-09-21T15:31:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/?p=1672"},"modified":"2018-11-22T18:32:32","modified_gmt":"2018-11-22T18:32:32","slug":"podcast-on-comedienne-linda-smiths-signature-gags","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/2018\/09\/21\/podcast-on-comedienne-linda-smiths-signature-gags\/","title":{"rendered":"Podcast on comedienne Linda Smith\u2019s signature gags"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/people\/academic-staff\/double.html\">Dr Oliver Double<\/a>, Reader in Drama within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/index.html\">School of Arts<\/a> and Head of the Performance and Theatre Research Cluster, has just released the latest episode of the podcast series \u2018A History of Comedy in Several Objects\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In the podcast series, Olly examines objects from Kent\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/standupcomedyarchive\/about\/\">British Stand-Up Comedy Archive<\/a> alongside Project Archivist Elspeth Millar.<\/p>\n<p>The recent film <em>Funny Cow\u00a0<\/em>(2017) uses one of the late, great Linda Smith\u2019s signature jokes without permission or attribution. \u2018Comedians and funny men see material as being common property\u2026 A lot of the jokes are shared,\u2019 explains Olly in the episode.<\/p>\n<p>Elspeth and Olly look through Linda\u2019s old set-lists and unpublished recordings going back to the 1980s to trace the origins of the joke, and look into how it fits into her development as a comedian. You\u2019ll hear different versions of the gag at different points in her career, to show how it changed and developed. It\u2019s still quoted as one of Linda\u2019s best jokes today. So what is the gag? All I\u2019ll say is if you\u2019re a fan of Linda\u2019s \u2013 and not so much of her hometown Erith \u2013 you probably already know it.
