{"id":1304,"date":"2016-11-17T15:31:16","date_gmt":"2016-11-17T15:31:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/?p=1304"},"modified":"2016-11-17T15:33:14","modified_gmt":"2016-11-17T15:33:14","slug":"vice-chancellors-research-scholarships-for-201718-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/2016\/11\/17\/vice-chancellors-research-scholarships-for-201718-announced\/","title":{"rendered":"Vice Chancellor\u2019s Research Scholarships for 2017\/18 Announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The School of Arts are delighted to be able to offer The Vice Chancellor\u2019s Research Scholarships for new PhD students starting in the academic year 2017\/18.<\/p>\n<p>These scholarships will be offered at the standard UK Research Council\u2019s rate and administered under the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/scholarships\/postgraduate\/gta.html\">Graduate Teaching Assistant Scheme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The scholarships cover full Home\/EU fees plus a maintenance grant and a salary which will total an amount equivalent to that offered by the Research Councils for 2017. The combined salary and maintenance grant is \u00a314,296 (rate for 2016\/17).<\/li>\n<li>The scholarships will be offered for one year in the first instance, renewable for a maximum of three years, subject to satisfactory academic performance.<\/li>\n<li>Recipients will be expected to undertake approximately four hours of teaching per week over the three years of the award.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Criteria<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Vice Chancellor\u2019s Research Scholarships will be awarded to outstanding applicants able to demonstrate a high level of academic achievement, excellent communication skills, and the potential to make a strong contribution to their chosen field of research. Candidates must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hold a good honours degree (First or 2.1) and a Master\u2019s degree at merit or distinction in a relevant subject or equivalent.<\/li>\n<li>Hold an offer of a place on a full-time doctoral research degree in the School of Arts for the academic year commencing September 2017.<\/li>\n<li>Have a high-quality research proposal.<\/li>\n<li>Be able to demonstrate their ability to teach on our undergraduate programme with the support of their supervisors and the module convenors.<\/li>\n<li>The Arts competition is open to UK, EU and overseas fee-paying students, however it should be noted that the award will only cover Home\/EU fees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How to apply <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is strongly recommended that you contact the School Director of Graduate Studies to discuss your research proposal. If you already know the member of staff you wish to supervise your project, you should contact him or her directly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Candidates must make a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/apply\/\">formal application <\/a>\u00a0to study on a School of Arts doctoral programme, by 30 January 2017.<\/li>\n<li>Candidates must also complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/study\/scholarships.html?tab=postgraduate-funding\">School of Arts Scholarship Application<\/a> and email this to <a href=\"mailto:arts-pgadmin@kent.ac.uk\">arts-pgadmin@kent.ac.uk<\/a> by 30 January 2017.<\/li>\n<li>All PhD applications received by the deadline will be considered for this award.<\/li>\n<li>Vice-Chancellor\u2019s scholarships are offered on a full-time basis. Applications for part-time scholarships will only be considered in exceptional or mitigating circumstances (eg. caring responsibilities which prevent a candidate from studying full-time).<\/li>\n<li>For full terms and conditions of the awards, please see the University of Kent&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/scholarships\/postgraduate\/index.html\">scholarships<\/a> \u00a0webpages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that these scholarships are only open to new students.
