{"id":1297,"date":"2016-11-07T10:40:59","date_gmt":"2016-11-07T10:40:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/?p=1297"},"modified":"2018-06-22T15:38:11","modified_gmt":"2018-06-22T14:38:11","slug":"renowned-theatre-director-thomas-ostermeier-to-receive-honorary-degree-from-kent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/arts-news\/2016\/11\/07\/renowned-theatre-director-thomas-ostermeier-to-receive-honorary-degree-from-kent\/","title":{"rendered":"Renowned Theatre Director Thomas Ostermeier to receive honorary degree from Kent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong class=\"lead\">The renowned German theatre director Thomas Ostermeier is to receive an honorary degree from the University.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"story_body\">\n<p>He is due to receive a <strong>Doctor of Arts degree<\/strong> at a ceremony at <strong>Canterbury Cathedral\u00a0<\/strong>on Friday, 18 November 2016.<\/p>\n<p>An <strong>actor and theatre director<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schaubuehne.de\/en\/people\/thomas-ostermeier.html\">Thomas Ostermeier <i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i><\/a>now works predominantly at the <strong>Schaub\u00fchne in Berlin<\/strong>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schaubuehne.de\/en\/pages\/theatre-profile.html\">Schaub\u00fchne <i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i><\/a> is affiliated as an institutional member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/research\/centres\/etrn\/\">European Theatre Research Network <\/a>(ETRN), which was founded in 2007 at the University. As part of this network Thomas Ostermeier has hosted Kent\u2019s students in Berlin and contributed to ETRN research at the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/\">School of Arts<\/a>.<br \/>\nThomas Ostermeier also collaborated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/staff-profiles\/drama\/boenisch.html\">Peter M Boenisch<\/a>, <strong>Professor of European Theatre<\/strong> at Kent, to co-author the book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/The-Theatre-of-Thomas-Ostermeier\/Boenisch-Ostermeier\/p\/book\/9781138914476\"><em>The Theatre of Thomas Ostermeier<\/em> <i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i><\/a>(Routledge, 2016).<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Ostermeier was born in 1968 in Soltau, West Germany and studied directing at the <strong>Hochschule f\u00fcr Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch in Berlin<\/strong> (1992-96). He began his theatrical career in 1990 acting under director Einar Schleef in his Faust project at <strong>Berlin\u2019s Hochschule f\u00fcr K\u00fcnste<\/strong>. In 1993-94 he was assistant director and actor with Manfred Karge in Weimar and at the Berliner Ensemble.<\/p>\n<p>From 1996-99 he was artistic director of the <strong>Baracke at the Deutsches Theater, Berlin<\/strong>, which was nominated Theatre of the Year 1998 by the magazine <em>Theater heute<\/em>. Since 1999 he has been resident director and member of the artistic direction of the Schaub\u00fchne. In November 2004, Ostermeier was appointed as a curator artiste associ\u00e9 for the <strong>Festival d\u2019Avignon<\/strong>. In May 2015, he directed the world premiere of Yasmina Reza\u2019s new play, <em>Bella Figura<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to numerous awards for individual productions, Thomas received the <strong>Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale<\/strong> for the entirety of his life\u2019s work in 2011. His success with French audiences and frequent presence of his plays in France have been rewarded in February 2015, when he was named <strong>Commandeur des Arts et Lettres<\/strong>.
