Dr Kaitlyn Regehr, Lecturer in Media Studies, has just presented in a feature item of the Today in Focus podcast discussing the new UK guidelines for sex education and her research with Professor Jessica Ringrose (UCL), released today Monday 30 September 2019.
Today in Focus is the daily podcast from The Guardian newspaper, hosted by Anushka Asthana, exploring the day’s key stories.
The UK sex education guidelines have been updated for the first time in nearly two decades, with the new lessons starting this term, and Kaitlyn discusses the impact of the digital world on sex awareness of young people.
‘In a lot of ways these new guidelines remain out of step with young people,’ explains Kaitlyn in the podcast. ‘These guidelines don’t think about the complex issues at stake with regards to pornography, with regards to ‘sugaring’ – that is, young people exchanging relationships for money and gifts – with regards to digital image exchange, with regards to consent. And so when we’re thinking about digital safety, and sex and relationships, often, as adult society, we think of it in much too simplistic terms, and so it’s not relevant to young people.’
Kaitlyn features at 26’30” into the podcast, which can be accessed online here:
