The Art History Research Centre are pleased to announce their next event taking place on Friday 6th December 4.00-6.00pm in Keynes LT2.

The talk will be given by Charlotte de Mille on “Matisse, Bergson, Debussy and creative process 1896-1903”.

This discussion offers parallel readings of the work of painter Henri Matisse and composer Claude Debussy as concerned with the unrepresentational qualities of experience. I argue that structural devices in their work from the 1890s are arranged to study concealment and revelation. Contrary to the modernist obsession with (the material) surface, Debussy and Matisse penetrate harmonic and psychological depth. Rather than offering a direct comparative analysis however, I suggest that like Charles Baudelaire’s poetry, the work of Henri Bergson can offer a lens to enlighten and refract common interests between the composer and painter.

 All welcome!
