{"id":84,"date":"2020-12-15T10:39:26","date_gmt":"2020-12-15T10:39:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/artistry\/?p=84"},"modified":"2020-12-15T10:39:26","modified_gmt":"2020-12-15T10:39:26","slug":"new-book-on-raphael","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/artistry\/2020\/12\/15\/new-book-on-raphael\/","title":{"rendered":"New book on Raphael"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-83 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/artistry\/files\/2020\/12\/Raphael-book-2-211x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"211\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/artistry\/files\/2020\/12\/Raphael-book-2-211x300.png 211w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/artistry\/files\/2020\/12\/Raphael-book-2.png 712w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 211px) 100vw, 211px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ben Thomas, Reader in History of Art, has just published a new book on Raphael, co-edited with Catherine Whistler of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Raphael: Drawing and Eloquence<\/em><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">\u00a0<\/span>presents a series of original insights from leading experts into the great Renaissance artist, that originate from the series of interdisciplinary research workshops that supported the Ashmolean\u2019s award-winning exhibition<span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">\u00a0<\/span><em>Raphael: The Drawings<\/em><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">\u00a0<\/span>in 2017. The essays in this volume, published by the Accademia Raffaello in Urbino, all develop in different ways the claim of that exhibition that a focus on Raphael\u2019s drawings as material objects that are eloquent in themselves reveals a less classical, more approachable and emotional artist. For some authors the detailed technical analysis of the drawings has led to new discoveries about the layered approach to design that these fragile sheets of paper embody, while others have explored what the drawings signified in a culture saturated with rhetorical concepts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The book contains contributions by: Ben Thomas, Marzia Faietti, Francesco Paolo Di Teodoro, Angelamaria Aceto, Catherine Whistler, David Love, Ita Mac Carthy, Christian K.
