It consists of a <strong>workshop at Tate Modern<\/strong> (8 December; 11.00-16.00), and an <strong>online symposium<\/strong> (9 December, 14.00-17.00 GMT).<\/p>\n<p>Interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral, this event showcases Ferrari\u2019s multifaceted and critically astute artistic practice. It offers first-hand experience of Ferrari\u2019s works and the opportunity to discuss their impact and relevance in theoretical, curatorial and practical terms. It negotiates key issues in the study of Latin American art and culture; and brings together scholars, museum professionals, curators and conservators. It is generously funded by the Society of Latin American Studies (SLAS).<\/p>\n<p>The workshop at Tate Modern is led by <strong>Eve Kalyva<\/strong> (lecturer in Art History, University of Kent). Speakers at the online symposium are <strong>Ruth Est\u00e9vez<\/strong> (director of Amant Foundation in Brooklyn, New York and co-curator of the 34th Sao Paolo Biennial), <strong>Niall HD Geraghty<\/strong> (Leverhulme Early Career fellow and lecturer in Latin American Cultural Studies, UCL), <strong>Andrea Wain<\/strong> (in charge of the research for Ferrari\u2019s <em>catalogue raisonn\u00e9<\/em> and co-curator of the exhibition<em> The Kind Cruelty: Le\u00f3n Ferrari, 100 Years<\/em>, Reina Sof\u00eda, Madrid 2021), <strong>Teresa Cos Rebollo<\/strong> (management and exhibitions assistant, Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven) and <strong>Gabriela Baldom\u00e1<\/strong> (conservator-restorer at the Augusto and Le\u00f3n Ferrari Art and Collection Foundation, FALFAA).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Programme<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 1. Symposium<\/strong>, 9 December (14.00-17.00 GMT, online)<\/p>\n<p><strong>14.00-14.05.<\/strong> Opening remarks<\/p>\n<p><strong>14.05-14.30.<\/strong> Ruth Est\u00e9vez, \u201cIn the Darkness, Words Weigh Twice\u201d. A contextual examination of Ferrari\u2019s literary collage <em>The Words of Others<\/em> [<em>Palabras Ajenas<\/em>] (1967), with a focus on the camouflaged violence in the rhetoric of Western discourse, ranging from the Judeo-Christian doctrine to the Second World War, and the role of the media in the reporting and reception of conflict and war.<\/p>\n<p><strong>14.30-14.55.<\/strong> Niall HD Geraghty, \u201cFerrari con(tra) Le\u00f3n\u201d. A unique interpretation of Ferrari\u2019s images as a profound source of theological and religious experimentation which can be seen to contribute to the rejuvenation of Latin American liberation theology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>14.50-15.15.<\/strong> Q&amp;A<\/p>\n<p><strong>15.15-15.30.<\/strong> Break<\/p>\n<p><strong>15.30-15.50.<\/strong> Andrea Wain, \u201cThe Kind Cruelty: The Archive as Organiser of the Exhibition\u201d. An insider\u2019s view of the process of curating Ferrari\u2019s retrospective <em>The Kind Cruelty: Le\u00f3n Ferrari, 100 Years<\/em> (15 December 2020 \u2013 12 April 2021, Reina Sof\u00eda, Madrid), focusing on the use of the artist\u2019s archive as the basis of investigation, the hypothesis and the script of the exhibition, and the place the \u201cimmaterial\u201d has in curatorial practice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>15.50-16.10.<\/strong> Teresa Cos Rebollo, \u201cParallel Lives, Parallel Aesthetics \u2013 G\u00fcls\u00fcn Karamustafa and Le\u00f3n Ferrari\u201d. A presentation of the homonymous exhibition at the Van Abbemusuem, Eindhoven (27 November 2021 \u2013 13 March 2022) and the challenges of showing Ferrari\u2019s work to international audiences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>16.10-16.30.<\/strong> Gabriela Baldom\u00e1, \u201cThe Art of Ferrari through the Conservator\u2019s Lens\u201d. An examination of some of Ferrari\u2019s key works such as <em>Justice\/1492\u20131992.
