Ben Thomas, Reader in Art History, has interviewed the artist Silvia Rosi for the Italian Cultural Institute in London.
Italian-Togolaise artist Silvia Rosi talks about her exploration of the ideas of memory, migration and diaspora through her work with photography, text and video. The artist looks at her personal family history drawing on her Togolaise heritage through self-portraits in which she plays her mother and father: Silvia re-enacts their experiences of migration from Togo in West Africa to Italy and their struggles, positioning herself as both observer and participant. Her pictures are both quotidian and complex, and are based on photographs that Rosi came across in an old family photo album.
