{"id":364,"date":"2018-10-15T09:31:10","date_gmt":"2018-10-15T09:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/amst-news\/?p=364"},"modified":"2018-10-19T09:55:22","modified_gmt":"2018-10-19T09:55:22","slug":"native-canadian-film-maker-visits-the-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/amst-news\/2018\/10\/15\/native-canadian-film-maker-visits-the-centre\/","title":{"rendered":"Native Canadian Film Maker visits the Centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Centre for American Studies is delighted to host indigenous Canadian film maker, Jooles Koostachin, during her visit to the UK for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nativespiritfoundation.org\/12th-native-spirit-film-festival-11-21-october-2018\/\">12<sup>th<\/sup> Native Spirit Film Festival<\/a> in London this month.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">On <\/span><b>Thursday 18<sup><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">th<\/span><\/sup> October<\/b><span style=\"color: #000000\">, Jooles will be leading a research seminar about Cree identity for all interested postgraduates and staff members, and we\u2019ll also be screening her two latest short films, followed by a discussion with the director about her work. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The research seminar will be held in <strong>Eliot College<\/strong>, <strong>Seminar Room 3 <\/strong>at <strong>1pm <\/strong>and the film screening takes place in <strong>Keynes College<\/strong>, <strong>Seminar Room 16<\/strong> at <strong>4pm.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>About the films<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>PLACEnta<\/strong> (<em>17min)<\/em><br \/>\nPLACEnta is the sharing between a mother, her daughter and a midwife of the re-discovery of First Nations traditional childbirth teachings. Jules sets out to find a place for her Cree Nation traditional placenta ceremony.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NiiSoTeWak:<\/strong> (<em>16min)<\/em><br \/>\nTwins Pawaken and Tapwewin Koostachin-Chakasim. Tapwewin and Pawaken are 10-year-old brothers trying to make sense of the world, their family and each other. They\u2019re already grappling with some heady questions about identity. What does it mean to be a twin? What does it mean to be Cree? How do you define yourself when you\u2019re forever linked to someone else?
