Moving out this December

For some of you on short courses, December marks the end of your time at Kent – and we’ll be sad to see you go! Before you head off, take a few minutes to check over your room and make sure it’s ready for the next student to move in.

Departure checklist:

Pack up your belongings – Take all your important items with you or arrange for them to be stored or donated by 10am on your departure day.

Arrange storage or shipping for your belongings –If you’re not taking everything with you, explore local or national storage and shipping services to keep your items safe until you return home or move to your next place.

Donate unwanted items – If you have clothes, books, or electronics you no longer need, consider donating them to Kent Union’s STUFF initiative or use the British Heart Foundation donation banks across campus. You can find your nearest location using our bins and recycling map.

Avoid damage when moving out – Take care when removing items from walls or furniture to avoid causing damage – for example, adhesive LED light strips can lift paint. Repair costs for any damage may be charged to your account.

✅Update your postal address – Make sure to update your address with anyone or any company that sends you mail, including your bank, phone provider, and online retailers. Even if you’re returning to campus accommodation next year, we’re unable to accept or forward mail for students not currently in residence. You can also check the Post Office’s mail redirection service for more guidance.

Switch off and unplug – Turn off and unplug all electricals (except the fridge).

Clear out your food – Empty your bin and remove all food from your fridge – no one enjoys dealing with lumpy milk! Non-perishables like tins or dried goods can be donated at the Mandela Building or Kent Union Building (Woody’s) in Park Wood.

Secure your room – Close all windows (leave the vent open), lock your doors, and collect any post or parcels before you go.

Return your key or fob – Hand these in at reception before you leave. If the reception is closed, pop them in the key drop box.

💡Leaving earlier than your contract end date?

If you plan to leave before your original contract end date, please complete an Application for Early Termination of the Agreement (found in the Changing your room/contract, leaving early or not arriving section of the FAQs) and include details of your circumstances.

Final Thoughts

Taking these steps will help make your move-out as smooth as possible, and a little preparation now goes a long way in avoiding last-minute stress and keeping your accommodation in great condition for the next student.

Thank you for being part of the Kent community – and best of luck in your next adventure!
