Content Enhancement Tasks
The proposed content enhancement tasks for catalogue records under the KEVEN project have been prioritised by the Steering Group.
The essential tasks that must be completed as part of the project, and that are to be funded within it have been defined as:
- Improvements to the display of context sensitive information about how to find a book in the library, using the classmark information given on the screen (from classmark to shelf)
- The addition of “buy online” functionality for users who wish to purchase a copy of the item in the record for themselves
- The injection of tables of content (TOCs) into catalogue records
In addition to this, a further 3 content enhancement tasks were identified that were of interest. However, it was agreed that it may not be possible to achieve all of these given the limited resources of the project. They are on the roadmap for revisiting at a later stage, or may even be attempted towards the end of the project if the reskinning task does not take up as much developer effort as has been projected. These non essential tasks are (in order of priority)
- Addition of preview (or “look inside”) functionality into item records – allowing users to search inside a text and see snippets or sections that are freely available
- Scoping the potential for a “mobile friendly” view of the catalogue
- Adding QR codes to item records that allow users with smart phones and the correct app, to photograph the code, and relay a URI for the screen to their phone browser
The implementation of these content enhancements are subject to technical and legal feasability – particularly in terms of the use of available Google (or other suitable) APIs
