Launching our 2016 Telephone Campaign

On Saturday 22 October the Development Office kicked off the University’s 2016 Telephone Campaign, with a team of students from across the University calling alumni in the UK and USA to share their experiences at Kent, update them on all the latest news from the University, and also to speak about the Kent Opportunity Fund.

Over 170 applications were received for the student fundraiser positions and a selection process identified 26 successful students who will be part of the campaign for the next four weeks.

One of these students is Noor Hafez, a second-year English student, who said: ‘I joined the 2016 Telephone Campaign so that I could be a part of a project I believe in. I want to help make education more inclusive of everyone regardless of financial capabilities or background. I would like to contribute to us passing our fundraising goal and being able to offer more scholarships and more opportunities for students who truly deserve it.’

The 2016 Telephone Campaign hopes to raise over £77,000 for the Kent Opportunity Fund, which supports the Alumni Postgraduate Research Scholarship, bursaries for students experiencing financial hardship, the Student Projects Grants Scheme and student sport.

Business in Kent after Brexit

Kent Business School (KBS) at the University, is inviting businesses from across the county to a lecture on the effects of Brexit on companies in Kent. Regional businesses will have the opportunity to hear leading experts on EU relations and international business at the University give their take on the latest developments after the EU referendum.

Professor Richard Whitman, Professor of Politics and International Relations at POLIR, will outline the expected political tug-of-war between the UK and the EU following Theresa May’s announcement that Article 50 will be triggered no later than March 2017.

In his talk he will attempt to unpick some of the recent political statements made and look at what efforts are required to make Brexit work for both the UK and the EU. What are the biggest challenges and opportunities lying ahead? Can any predictions on outcomes be made? And what is happening behind the scene – the million-dollar question!

Dr Fragkiskos Filippaios, Reader in International Business at KBS, will put the wider political debate in a business context and discuss how Kent businesses may be positively and negatively impacted.

The event, on Thursday, October 20, starts at 17.30 with the chance for informal networking and refreshments. This event is the first of the Business Soundbites series at KBS where academics and students come together with businesses, not-for-profit organisations and government bodies to share knowledge and experiences. Two short lectures on important trends in business and the UK economy will be followed by drinks and music. All are welcome.
