University Cecilian Choir to feature on BBC Radio 3

The University Cecilian Choir will be featured on BBC Radio 3 this Sunday, as part of ‘The Choir’ at 16.00.

The weekly programme celebrating choral singing will feature the Cecilian Choir as part of its ‘My Choir’ slot, which highlights choirs from around the country. The idea came from English lecturer and member of the bass section, Dr Michael Hughes, who submitted a podcast reflecting on the Choir, its members and its role in bringing staff, students and alumni of the University together.

Listen to the programme this Sunday on Radio 3 at 16.00 or online here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b074z8m6. The feature on the Cecilian Choir itself will remain online indefinitely as part of the programme’s archives.

The Cecilian Choir performs next on Thursday 31 March at 13.10 St Peter’s Methodist Church, Canterbury, in a programme of Vivaldi and Mozart for Easter.

Former Kent employee publishes latest novel

Former University employee and Whitstable author Janet Pywell has just published her second crime thriller Masterpiece.

Janet has self-published four books including The Golden Icon, Red Shoes and Ellie Bravo. In her previous careers, she worked in the travel and tourism industry in Spain and was also director of her own marketing company for ten years.

Her latest thriller, Masterpiece is a gripping novel set in London, Dresden and Mallorca. She has also edited and published two books of 100-word stories written by 7-11 year old students from St Stephen’s School in Canterbury as well as a book of poetry written by school children throughout the UK for the charity Seeds for Africa based at the University of Kent.

She is currently working on her next crime thriller – THE BOOK OF HOURS – due to be published in 2017.

On 20 April, Janet will be a guest speaker at the ‘Meet the Author’ event at the Grand Hotel in Folkestone where Agatha Christie wrote Murder on the Orient Express. She will be talking about the challenges and excitement of self-publishing and the opportunities for an author in today’s multi-media society.

Applicant Day 23 March 2016

Enrolment Management Services will be holding an Applicant Day on 23 March 2016 at the Canterbury campus.  These are essential recruitment events for the University.

To assist with this event 118 parking bays will be closed in Giles Lane blue zone car park.

All car parks in the centre of campus may be full before 09.00, which could mean you need to use the car parks within the Park Wood area.  There are parking bays available next to the Park Wood accommodation as well. We recommend that you consider allowing for the additional time that may be required to travel to and from Park Wood.

Pedestrian signs within Park Wood Courts, will inform you of the average time required to walk to the main campus. Alternatively, you can use the Park and Ride bus ticket that was sent with your parking permit to travel to and from the main campus.

Please remember that parking enforcement will continue in accordance with the University Regulations for the Management of Traffic.

EU referendum seminar in House of Lords

In association with the James Madison Trust for the study of federal systems, The School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Kent is convening a series of seminars on the EU referendum ahead of the vote on 23 June.

Access to Committee Room G is via Black Rod’s Garden entrance. Please see https://www.kent.ac.uk/politics/gec/news/index.html?view=581 for a copy of the seminar programme and a map showing the location of the seminar.

There will be some fantastic experts and leading politicians from across the political spectrum who take different positions on whether to remain or to leave, including; Baroness Sharon Bowles (Liberal Democrat), Lord Maurice Glasman (Labour), Mark Field MP (Conservative) [tbc], Dr Julie Smith (Cambridge).

We will debate the economic pros and cons of Britain’s EU membership, but also the emerging economic governance of the EU and relations between euro- and non-euro members.
