Firstly, a little teaser image of a French magazine called Vedettes which was mostly active during the war years. Recently, NoRMMA acquired a few issues (dating from 1942 and 1943) on a trip to Paris, and these will, no doubt, sooner rather than later make it to the blog. Stay tuned!
Secondly, I would like to invite all of you to click the following link and officially join the NoRMMA mailing list. The site will ask you for a few details about yourself, such as your name, institutional affiliation (if any) and areas of interest. This will enable us to put together a comprehensive list of our members and their interests, as well as provide an easy way to get in touch with all of you. Please do take a moment to fill this out.
Thanks!
University of Kent people – tomorrow, we will be officially launching the research network in Jarman foyer, at 6pm, followed by a screening of The Women (Cukor, 1939) at 7. Do RSVP if you would like to come along!
Hope to see you there!
One of the most fascinating aspects of fan magazines is the wide range of content on display – to celebrate this, let’s all try our hands at this little crossword puzzle from Hollywood, May 1941!
Puzzle and solution will be posted soon in the Puzzles section of the blog.
As fan magazine researchers, we are particularly interested in digital initiatives which make these magazines – insofar as copyright is not an issue – accessible and searchable online.
One of the best resources we have encountered in this regard is Lantern, the search platform for the collections of the Media History Digital Library.
The website boasts over a million pages’ worth of digitised film-related content, including a vast number of issues of such fan magazines as Photoplay, Motion Picture Magazine, Picture Play and The New Movie Magazine and trade magazines such as Variety and Motion Picture News.
Hi all,
This is the blog belonging to NoRMMA (Network of Researchers: Movies, Magazines and Audiences), a research network situated at the University of Kent but open to all scholars interested in fan and film magazines and their position as a meeting ground between industry and audiences.
