Autumn Term Screening and Discussion Timetable UPDATED

Hi all,

I hope you’ve all enjoyed the Summer break.

Please pay attention to the amended timetable below-we now start in week 4 (21st of October) and not week 2 (7th of October).

All are very welcome to join us for this term’s screening and discussion sessions. These will take place on alternate Wednesdays from 4.30-7pm. We will meet in Jarman 7. We have themed this term’s films around The Gothic:

Week 4, 21st of October: Rebecca (1940, Alfred Hitchcock, 130 mins)

Week 6, 4th of November: Uncle Silas (1947, Charles Frank, 98 mins)

Week 8, 18th of November: The Spiral Staircase (1945, Robert Siomak, 83 mins)

Week 10, 2nd of December: The Innocents (1961, Jack Clayton, 100 mins)

Week 12, 16th of December: The Secret Beyond the Door (1947, Fritz Lang, 99 mins)

8th of December 5-7pm, Jarman 7

15th of December 5-7pm, Location: To Be Confirmed

More information on films/other activities will be posted in due course. It is anticipated that some of our meetings will focus on the Group’s very interesting involvement with the Melodrama Research Consortium.

We can now confirm the films selected for screening in advance of our maternal melodrama symposium on the 3rd of June.

Stella Dallas

These are:

Stella Dallas (1937, King Vidor) Tuesday 13 May, 4-7pm, Studio 6

Mildred Pierce (1945, Michael Curtiz) Tuesday 20 May, 4-7pm, Studio 6

The Old Maid (1939, Edmund Goulding) Tuesday 27 May, 4-7pm, Studio 6

Introductions to these films will be posted at a later date.

And please note the room change: we will be in Jarman Studio 6.

Leading up to the symposium on Maternal Melodrama on Tuesday the 3rd of June, the Group will be meeting on the preceding Tuesdays from 4-7pm to screen and discuss maternal melodrama.

All are welcome to attend our screening and discussion sessions in the Autumn Term. There is now more information of the rest of the term’s screenings below:

These are due to take place in KS6 (Keynes, Seminar Room 6) from 4-7pm on:

13th of November (Week 7):  Frances’ selection of various episodes of TV horror will be screened.

27th of November (Week 9):  Tamar’s choice: Coquette (1929, Sam Taylor, 76 mins) (and potentially a Mary Pickford silent beforehand).

11th of December (Week 11):  Kat and Frances will screen The Skin I Live In (2011, Pedro Almodovar, 120 mins).

18th of December (Week 12): Christmas Holiday (1944, Robert Siodmak, 93 mins) will appropriately prepare us for the festive season.
