Screening Timetable for Autumn Term 2016

We now have dates for our Melodrama Screening and Discussion Sessions next Term. Meetings will take place on even Mondays, from 5-7pm, in Jarman 7.

All are welcome to join us on: the 3rd, 17th and 31st of October, the 14th and 28th of November and the 12th of December 2016.

Following the success of the Gothic Feminism conference we will be screening films and reading novels relating to the Gothic.  We start with Bluebeard (Edgar G. Ulmer, 1944, 72 mins) in the first session, also taking this opportunity to discuss the remainder of the term as well as other plans.

All are welcome to join us on: the 25th of January, the 8th and 22nd of February, the 7th and 21st of March and the 4th of April 2016.

Some possibilities for Gothic-related films have been discussed, and these will be confirmed in due course.

Updated Autumn Term Screening and Discussion Timetable

Hi again all,

Apologies for any further inconvenience caused, but we have moved our screening and discussion sessions. These will now take place on mostly ‘even’ Mondays of term. They are still set to run from 4.30-7pm and take place in Jarman 7. All are still very welcome to attend!

Week 5, 26th of October: Rebecca (1940, Alfred Hitchcock, 130 mins)

Week 6, 2nd of November: Uncle Silas (1947, Charles Frank, 98 mins)

Week 10, 30th of November: The Spiral Staircase (1945, Robert Siodmak, 83 mins)

Week 12, 14th of December: A Christmas film yet to be decided upon.

More information on each of these films will be posted in advance of the screenings.

I hope you’ve all enjoyed the Summer break.

Please pay attention to the amended timetable below-we now start in week 4 (21st of October) and not week 2 (7th of October).

All are very welcome to join us for this term’s screening and discussion sessions. These will take place on alternate Wednesdays from 4.30-7pm. We will meet in Jarman 7. We have themed this term’s films around The Gothic:

More information on films/other activities will be posted in due course. It is anticipated that some of our meetings will focus on the Group’s very interesting involvement with the Melodrama Research Consortium.

We can now confirm the films selected for screening in advance of our maternal melodrama symposium on the 3rd of June.

These are:

Stella Dallas (1937, King Vidor) Tuesday 13 May, 4-7pm, Studio 6

Mildred Pierce (1945, Michael Curtiz) Tuesday 20 May, 4-7pm, Studio 6

The Old Maid (1939, Edmund Goulding) Tuesday 27 May, 4-7pm, Studio 6

Introductions to these films will be posted at a later date.

Leading up to the symposium on Maternal Melodrama on Tuesday the 3rd of June, the Group will be meeting on the preceding Tuesdays from 4-7pm to screen and discuss maternal melodrama.

All are welcome to attend our screening and discussion sessions in the Autumn Term. There is now more information of the rest of the term’s screenings below:

These are due to take place in KS6 (Keynes, Seminar Room 6) from 4-7pm on:

13th of November (Week 7):  Frances’ selection of various episodes of TV horror will be screened.

27th of November (Week 9):  Tamar’s choice: Coquette (1929, Sam Taylor, 76 mins) (and potentially a Mary Pickford silent beforehand).

11th of December (Week 11):  Kat and Frances will screen The Skin I Live In (2011, Pedro Almodovar, 120 mins).

18th of December (Week 12): Christmas Holiday (1944, Robert Siodmak, 93 mins) will appropriately prepare us for the festive season.
