Volunteering – Researching women in the First World War

The Big Ideas Company is looking for a researcher to work for a short time (between 4 – 5 days) to undertake research into women in the First World War.

The researcher will produce research into inspirational stories of twenty-five women during the First World War, including making in-depth case studies into three women.  This list should include women from the UK and overseas, and should also include archive images of the researched women, and women’s activity during the First World War.  The Big Ideas Company need this information to be delivered by Tuesday 8 January 2018.

The School has been advertising the work of Enactus Kent, a student society involved in organising volunteering projects and helping students to significantly enhance their CVs and skillsets. Volunteering: Roles at PWRR and Queen’s Museum

The Princess of Wales’ Royal Regiment and the Queen’s Regiment Museum – based inside Dover Castle – have several volunteering opportunities available, to work with their staff as a Collections Assistant or a Museum Assistant.

These roles are excellent opportunities for any students interested in a career in the museums and heritage sector to gain some invaluable experience of working in a busy museum. Training will be provided, and travel costs to and from Dover Castle will be provided by the museum (applicants may also be eligible to receive funding from the University’s Experience of Work bursary scheme).

Volunteers Wanted – Age of Revolutions Project

Dr Ben Marsh is currently looking for volunteers who are interested in taking part in the Age of Revolutions Project that will be running between 2017 and 2020.

The University of Kent scheme will match student volunteers up with appropriate projects for their interests, skills, time availability, and ambitions, with the possibility of student placements (e.g. travelling to work in museums or archives for short periods), project work (e.g. writing descriptive content or designing artwork for digital resources), and other activities supporting research or work with schools.

We will be running a range of trips and workshops, including a discounted visit to Waterloo in February, and the first placements are expected to begin in Spring 2018 but opportunities will run through 2019.

Attached is a call for volunteers, containing more information about the project, and a short application form which anyone interested should complete and return to Dr Marsh by Monday 13th November 2017.

Access Advisory Group at Walmer Castle

The English Heritage team at Walmer Castle are interested in setting up a Community Access Advisory Group to support a new project called ‘Rediscovering the Pleasure Grounds.’ They are looking for individuals who have mobility, learning, or sensory impairments to be involved to ensure that the adaptations, activities, intern and volunteering opportunities that will come out of this project are accessible to everyone. Walmer Castle, an English Heritage property in Deal, are seeking to form a Community Access Advisory Group. The purpose of the group is to obtain feedback on an exciting project called ‘Rediscovering the Pleasure Grounds’ which will start in 2018 (subject to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund). The team has been working with an access advisor during the development of the plans to restore the gardens but English Heritage would also like to create their own Community Access Advisory Group.

Guest Post: Enactus Kent

Kent Union supports over a hundred and fifty student-run societies and sports clubs. Getting involved in any society or club can be great for your employability, but one of the most relevant is Enactus Kent, part of the worldwide Enactus volunteering organisation. Jameela Ahmed from Enactus Kent would like to introduce you to the work they are doing in Canterbury to help change people’s lives, and to tell you how you can get involved. See the end of the article for the events they are holding during Welcome Week and the first week of term.

Volunteering – ‘100 miles for 100 years’

‘100 miles for 100 years’ is a series of thirty self-guided heritage trails themed on local people, events and places relevant to the First World War in Kent. Each trail will feature landmarks illustrated with images marking where people lived or an event happened. Each image will be accompanied by a brief informative description to be used whilst following the trail but with links to encourage deeper exploration of local issues and events. The Kent in WW1 team are looking for anyone who would be interested in helping develop these trails.

The trails will be available as mobile-compliant apps from www.kentww1.com including full downloadable directions and health and safety guidance. Also on the website is a downloadable pdf version with more details including a trail quiz to encourage deeper interaction and an interesting activity for families. They are also available as a leaflet.

The trails will be developed in association with local people who will be given the opportunity to receive training in trail development and event organisation. Each individual trail will have a launch event where the community can join together to learn about their locality in the First World War.

Volunteering – WWI Oral History project at Lowewood Museum

Lowewood Museum in Hertfordshire has begun a project focusing on a set of five diaries written in World War One. The man who wrote them served in both the RAMC and in the Essex regiment, and the project leader is looking for four volunteers to help transcribe them. #KentGivesBack – Sat 20th May

On Saturday 20th May Kent Union and the University of Kent are partnering together for the first ever #KentGivesBack, a day of volunteering in which we are inviting currents students and alumni to volunteer at Catching Lives, Canterbury.

We will be preparing lunch and running activities for service users until around 12pm, interacting with service users and carrying out social activities, arts and crafts and games.

Volunteering Opportunity: Oral History Volunteers at the RAF Museum

The Royal Air Force Museum is looking to recruit a number of Oral History Volunteers, to take part in their project to record and preserve the stories of those who experienced historic RAF Hendon and the surrounding Colindale area.

Volunteers will complete a training course delivered by the Oral History Society, and will be speaking to members of the public in the area and carrying out interviews with them. This is an extremely good opportunity for anyone interested in oral history to obtain some highly prized training and real-life research experience.

Volunteering: Exhibition Guide at the Royal Engineers Museum

Are you out-going and love meeting people? You could be just the person we are looking for to greet and offer visitors further information about the temporary exhibition at the Museum this summer.

‘The Mechanicals’ temporary exhibition will be at the Museum from 25th July – 3rd September. Your role would involve meeting and greeting visitors to the exhibition, explaining about the exhibits and assisting the Learning Team with the activities for the duration of the exhibition. The exhibition consists of hand-crafted automata that are displayed alongside hands-on exhibits that show the basic mechanisms involved in making the automata work, simplifying the principles behind drives, pulleys, ratchets and levers. The exhibition is accompanies by family friendly activities, creating simple machines inspired by the Mechanicals.
