Yemen: Pathways for Peace and Stability

6 June

Search for Common Ground (Search) and the Brussels School of International Studies (BSIS) would like to invite you to the following presentation by Search for Common Ground’s Yemen Country Director, Shoqi Maktary with welcoming remarks by Search for Common Ground’s President and CEO, Shamil Idriss.

Yemen is at a critical juncture in its history. In a country of approximately 27 million people, over 10,000 have been killed, 3.1 million displaced, and thousands more are facing food insecurity and an unprecedented cholera outbreak. Violence and the humanitarian crisis now reach all Yemenis, diplomatic solutions remain at a stalemate, and social cohesion at the local level continues to disintegrate. Yet, despite these disheartening current realities, crucial entry points for peacebuilding remain. One of the only NGOs still working on the ground in Yemen, Search for Common Ground is continuing to implement programs to build local resilience to conflict and violence; combining peacebuilding efforts with life-saving humanitarian assistance.

Shoqi Maktary is Search for Common Ground’s Country Director in Yemen. He will share his analysis on the complex and evolving dynamics throughout the country and provide an overview of Search’s inclusive, gender-sensitive approach to peacebuilding. He will also present a recently published Peace Analysis, which provides concrete policy and programmatic recommendations gathered from our work on the ground that can be used by government bodies, supranational agencies, and INGOs to inform successful peacebuilding efforts in Yemen.
